I heard about this at World Fantasy and was really sorry to. Top-notch author.

Everything has fallen in my lap at once. I've nearly completed the third draft of my third Raine's Landing novel. The page proofs for my next collection -- a US-published extended version of my 2004 'Going Back' -- turned up and needed to be dealt...

Becoming a Writer by Dorothea Brande is a book every propective author should read. And maybe this is the time to mention -- it's not a book exactly -- but I've recently started a new blog on the subject of writing. I'm doing it rather tentativel...

Everyone has a different approach. I have always typed simply because I cannot read my own handwriting ... and no, I'm not being flippant. Updike is correct-- word processors have changed the nature of writing. When you had to type onto a page, th...

I'm currently reading Living With Ghosts -- rather slowly, I'm afraid, since I am busy and have been travelling -- and am loving it. Original and beautifully written, with some terrific characters. Looking forward to your next one, Kari.

The show's dead in the water, so far as I can see. Which is a real darned shame, because it started out so promisingly, and was so popular that there was talk about a feature movie. But the real point now is this -- I'll be attending both British ...

I have a feeling that Primeval's Third Season had a massive rewrite about halfway through in efforts to trim the budget and then was further rewritten when they found out there wasn't going to be a season four. Which is sad, because even as bad as...

Modern Life

I've been silent on Wonderlands for quite a while now. And the simple reason is, other things in life have all got in the way, coming together as they do. So far the last couple of weeks I've attended: a bbq; an old friend's birthday celebration; a BFS Open Evening, with author Tim Powers as the special guest; the closing down party for the Fantasy Centre, Islington, London (see my personal blog); and the former editor of Cemetery Dance magazine, Robert Morrish, was in London for a few da… Continue

TOUCHING EVIL

There’ve been several discussions on Wonderlands so far about the bad guys who inhabit our type of fiction. I’ve contributed to a couple of them, but thought I’d broach the subject from my own perspective. And the moment I did that, something occurred to me that never had before. I started out by trying to think of bad guys in short stories … and pretty quickly realized that there aren’t too many. Human bad guys, I mean. Supernatural ones don’t count.

Think about it for a moment. How many true… Continue

ARE BOOKS LIKE A GLACIER GLOBAL DUMBENING MIGHT MELT?

In the most recent issue of Cemetery Dance magazine, British horror editor Stephen Jones repeats his assertion that 'almost no one reads books any more.' In fact, he repeats it at length, opining that, because of competition from the visual media, mass market books will go 'the way of the vinyl record,' reading will revert to being 'a gentleman's pursuit,' and there'll only be the independent presses left to pander to it.

Now, I've known Steve for more than twenty years. He generally goe… Continue

Hey Tony, I just had some positive news. I entered a chapter book in the Charlotte Duncan Award for children's writing. My book has been short listed. They announce the winners in May.

Tony-- That 'Six degrees of separation' you mentioned, that is very true. And it sounds so Taoistic to me. The Great Web of Life. We are all connected. Spooky.

Hi Tony,
Thanks for the friend request and the advice. I know it's a hard slog but I'm sticking in there. I've been doing a fair bit of networking, trying to get my name out there in the industry. I have a couple of MS's with agents at present. I will keep at it until my books are on the shelves.

Cheers

I've left Eos now, Tony - my US publisher is Orbit, and Tim Holman's my editor. Diana at Eos is a fine editor though.

I agree completely. And if you look at the resurrection stories both Egyptian and Greek folklore you can almost visualize where the newly developed religion of Christanity borrowed wholesale many of these ideas.

I think there is a remarkable compatibility that exists with Taoism and Stoicism. They work together by creating a more moody, more mysterious world where my characters live.

Tony,
I've got a fantasy out called Roland of the High Crags:Evil Arises. I'm crazy enough to believe you can write a fantasy series and actually fold into the story line two distinct forms of philosophy concepts (Taoism and Stoicism). Make it a thinking person's fantasy series. Very complex, but readable.

Or, at least, that's what I have in mind.
