Brilliantly done Tony, I havn't come across your first book but I will definitely try and track down a copy. I'm finding hard enough to get a manuscript read let alone picked up by a publisher. Congratulations on the good news of your second book ...

Profile Information

About Me:
I am an artist and children's writer from Bathurst Australia. I have a number of picture book texts under consideration by publishers and I am currently working on two junior/mid grade novels, reviewing a YA fantasy novel and plotting a mid grade Sci-Fi novel which deals with intolerance of aliens and modified humans. I think books are the magic wands of our society and who is better suited to wielding magic than children. I have some galleries of my art and samples of my writing at my web site. Out of my comfort zone

First Person - Third Person, that is the question.

For me, the answer has always been third person. I hate writing in first person and a lot of the time, I dont really enjoy reading first person prose. There are some writers who can do it brilliantly and you don't notice the three million "I"s in the text. I find that I am self conscious writing in first person and don't get the creative flow I usually get and I tend to slip back into third person when I'm not looking.

Sticking to third person… Continue

That's the attitude, and I'll quote Harry Harrison in Hells' Cartographers here. "The road to writing success is lined with the skulls of those who gave up."

My boys are 13, 16, and almost 18. And yes, we have fun with the games, but only the youngest likes console games; we are big pc gamers. We like to see who can play through Myst, Riven, or Exile the fastest.

We missed most of the rain thankfully, we could have done with a bit more rain though, but that's life. Its been hot and humid up here as well, but we haven't hit any of the temperatures that people have been getting done in lower NSW and in Victoria. I watched some of the recent Australian Open in Melbourne and was shocked at how much people would go through to be a part of the action.
The writing has been up and down, though I seem to be finding a rhythm again in the last few weeks. Its been hard but its well worth the trouble to get back into a routine of writing each day.

I guess it also depends on what you consider YA to be. A lot of people have the misconception that if the main characters are teens, that the content is YA, but if that's true, then movies like 28 Weeks Later (the sequel to the zombie flick) would be lumped into this category, when the content, gory and violent, is clearly for an older audience.
In Australia, the laws for what is considered obscene language have changed so dramatically, as I think you've probably noticed. What used to be crude are now so ingrained in the language, that it is now viewed as normal language. That is not to say that people are swearing their heads off, but it doesn't raise the eyebrows as it once did. There is also the issue of when swearing is considered appropriate to use, and in the case of BMR, the characters used it in times of stress, so it wasn't willy-nilly.

Matt recently blogged on how people have knocked some of the content due to the impression that given the age of the main characters in BMR, the storyline should be free of activities that the bulk of teenagers indulged in periodically through the story. I don't understand why there are complaints, the behavior of the characters is pretty tame in comparison to how some of the kids acted when I was growing up.
Given your artistic background, you might also want to check out Epilogue if you haven't done so already. Not only does it gather together a bunch of high quality art, but there are links and tutorials galore. In any case, I am sure that there will be something of interest to you should you venture there.

Gah! I seriously need to edit my comments before posting. That last one was pretty bad. Methinks I need to pay more attention. :D
I'd recommend that you sign up for a few trial subscriptions with VT as well, to get a feel for what they publish. Come to think of it, they are also looking for editors, so that might appeal to some of the members here as well. By the way, Tee Morris' DMP novel Billibub Baddings & the Case of the Singing Sword is also released there. He podcasted this novel at podiobooks some time ago. Its a cool novel indeed.
Mur is one of the coolest people alive. Although I haven't really chatted with her too heavily, she seems to have a good sense of humor and a lot of experience in various areas of publishing, including editing. I was pretty surprised when I read that she worked on White Wolf's Exalted roleplaying game, as well as some of their other product lines. It is quite a small world when you consider that Scott Sigler also wrote for them on numerous occasions.
If you like Mur then you will likely enjoy the work of Matthew Wayne Selznick. Those two are now newly published authors with Permuted Press and have used similar marketing methods for their written work. I also remember them working on a podcast together with some other writers some time ago. I find it interesting to see what some of the new novelists come up with.
