With regard to your pertinent post, Carole, I would like to point out (in my capacity a rather obviously pasty Scotsman) that the use of non-white characters on covers makes me more likely to pick a book up to see what it's about. The Earthsea is...

Current Discussions in the world of minority speculative fiction

The whitewashing of covers:

I thought I'd seen the last of all this a few years ago when Ursula LeGuin's Earthsea was whitewashed. But alas, no:

THE PALADIN by Cherryh. A fantasy that obviously takes place in an Asian setting, it's original 1988 cover featured Caucasian characters, which caused quite a bit of confusion for me. I see that its 2002 cover remains "whitewashed."

Jay Lake's GREEN A book about a slave rebellion but the cover features a white protag

Incredibly long chatty post with a bit of Sword and Soul poetry

Okay, am slogging through the third revision. Aaaargh! But hey, we all know it's gotta be done.

I'm finally cutting loose in my novel. I really had to allow myself to be brave and transparent and emotional in Wind Follower. Sometimes I'd write a scene and get very ashamed because it was such an intimate scene. But that seems to be my talent in writing: writing a story that is very intimate. (I just have to watch my pacing.)

It's hard to do this because deep-felt emotional pain isn't what some… Continue

Musing on Career Planning

Well, Juno Books became an imprint of Pocket Books/Simon & Schuster. Juno published Wind Follower. Now, this may be good news but it might not be. Juno's been going toward urban fantasy. I like folkloric fantasy. Exploring tribal culture and what makes tribes. Current novel is Constant Tower which needs an agent cause it's neither urban fantasy nor does it have a female protag which is what Juno wants. But it's such a great book! What to do!

I have another novel, Daughters of Men, which man… Continue

If it's any consolation re Pocket Books Carole, they're at least a large and well established list/publisher. Here in UK when they closed down Earthlight (S&S SFF list) all the contracts were taken onto the Pocket Books list - so I do have one of the Last Clansman books with the Pocket Books badge... I hope it is a favourable transistion for you in the long-term...

All best

I find it difficult to find people in my region that are interested in discussing writing, let alone speculative fiction. It is so easy to feel alone when you live in a small community where most people are interested in sports. I am currently looking into hanging out with a nearby arts council as a way to keep in touch with that part of me that enjoys art, craft and music. We have several mini-galleries around here that I have never visited in the decade and a half of living in this area. It is pretty sad given the beauty that many of the people in our community have created. And perhaps I might be able to able to meet others interested in writing by being a part of the group.

Hi Carole! Thanks for the welcome! Wonderlands is turning out to be a throughly friendly place . . . I've always been a bit reluctant to engage in online networking, but this is terrific fun! Take care!

If we never aspire we will never grow or perfect our art. We have to face numerous trials while we're moving towards a particular goal but it is our mental response that can change the way that we see the journey. I think that striving and struggling are quite different from each other. Striving is moving towards a goal, whilst struggling tends to be more negative, focusing on the troubles that someone might face whilst moving towards a goal.

Ah, see, the jewelry and interesting make-up were what drew me. Her expression and the fists only registered as after effects. :)

Yes, although I am a bit frustrated at some paragraphs. Endings are so hard sometimes and I have been under stress, which makes it a lot harder to write, but by 31st I will put the ending full stop.

I hopefully won't break. I haven't dealt with a lot of rejection, so we shall see. I could send it after some edits and the likes to you, but I try not to bother people, since I already established my beta circle people.
