I definately agree with you Gary. I am a new writer and some books I found beyond me to begin with and now they make more sense and I get more out of them by reading them now. It was Sol Stein's 'Stein on Writing' that pulled everything together f...

I am currently writing a series of stories about a necromancer (not inherently bad in my world) who goes down the slippery slope from good to bad. I wanted to write this series because I don't really think there are any good or bad characters. Eac...

I've been having more fun with my antangonist in the novel I'm wrapping up. And reviewers who've read the chapters from her POV think she's a great character. I think the trick is to make the antagoist "bad", while making his or her actions seem j...

Actors always say that it is much more fun to play a bad guy than a good one, so why shouldn't it be more fun to write a bad guy too? I sometimes think that an author, sitting alone at his/her keyboard, is comparable to an auteur film director gon...

Currently I have them both a POV characters. You get to experience how this twisted chap thinks - should create tension as the reader will know that due to his entrenched convictions that he will not stop. He doesn't see himself as evil at all but...

Hi Andrew, Its always a good thing to discuss to be honest, I like to think of it as a see-saw and that each has to counter balance the other, otherwise it won't work. I'd suggest having a careful think about the "good guy" and depending upon how ...

Yes, agreed. A awful as he is there is method in his madness and he genuinely believes in a twisted way that what he is doing is for the best.

Thanks. I try not to be too contraversial ...which I have a tendancy to slip into!

Jealous of your London address...one of my other writing projects is a historical fiction about the 1809 London theatre riots, and I would love to be able to pop into the British Library to research whenever I wanted! I am heading out in May and I try to get there once a year, so I probably shouldn't complain. :)

Appreciate your insightful comments in all these discussions!

You know, Andrew, over the years one book in a particular genre begins to sound like the one you read last week. Finding 'original' material is quite unique. Finding it anywhere is quite unique.

If you come up with something unique, buddy, on one hand you'll have something people will want to read--but oddly enough, you'll find a lot of editiors afraid of it. Something 'unique' kinda frightens'em.

So Andrew, what form of fantasy is your favorite? And the big question . . . have you dabbled a bit in wrting some yourself?

I'm editing my book now. I've learned a lot about writing just by doing that.
