It spawned two sequels and a syndicated television series, but according to mainstream audiences 1982’s The Beastmaster is nothing more than bad sword and sorcery and soft core drivel. I digress! .....
Ah yes... fond memories of Marc Singer in his loin-cloth... as you say Kristin, 'what's not to like!'
I find it interesting that some people think such things were intentionally camp in the 70s and 80s - I am pretty certain that was not the intention - this was before tv became all cynical, self-refrencing, retro or kitcsh - they were completely 'serious' about the programmes and expected their audiences to tak a leap of faith with them. We didn't know the special effects were shonky - we'd never seen their like before...
Here here on the state of camp then and now! I had The Beastmaster in my netflix saved queue for awhile. I don't know what happened to my crappy and over watched taped on tv tape, so I was ecstatic when it was available on the instant watch box. I knew I had to review it then! Even though it meant I had no pictures for all the juicy stuff I was talking about.
Yes, they may seem bad now, but they were the height then, and I suspect a lot of folks in the mediums today were inspired by these classics!
