Wonderlands

In my case I've just ordered Meditations on Middle-Earth very cheaply indeed on Amazon through one of the sellers. A series of essays about Tolkien by over a dozen other fantasy writers (among them Robin Hobb, Terry Pratchett, Charles de Lint, Raymond E. Feist, Ursula Le Guin) discussing Tolkien's influence on them, their reaction to him.

Not exactly critical stuff, but a welcome refresher to remind me why I got into fantasy in the first place. It doesn't begin and end with - as some would have it our rather conservative establishment don - Tolkien of course! But I know of no other writer who has underlined for me the magic of, the power of storytelling, the unfurling of it within your imagination, the scope and potential of it. The Le Guin essay, which is unusual in its technical approach and looks to be among one of the best essays in the book can be found to be read for free, HERE.

I'm currently on the second of Brent Weeks' The Night Angel Trilogy. I enjoyed the first one a lot.

I bought Patricia Briggs' Bone Crossed and Dante's The Divine Comedy 1: Hell. I've since finished Bone Crossed and have yet to begin Dante. Leaving that one for my long plane ride coming up.
Truly can not wait for The Republic of Thieves by Scott Lynch, though. The Lies of Locke Lamora pleasantly surprised me, as did the sequel Red Sea Under Red Skies . I am excited to see where Scott will take the series next!

I read the Lynch ones too and found they were pretty good. Did you finish Dante? I found him very interesting but difficult in places since I had to constantly refer to the notes in the back about the people of the time.

I'm planning to read Peter V Brett too. It's called The Painted Man here in Aus, but the US seems to have called it The Warded Man.

Hi Alan - I hope you have voted for either Brent Weeks or Peter Brett as they are both Nominees in the David Gemmell Legend Awards :-)
[End Shameless Plug!] I have heard really good things about both books btw...

Personally, I haven't bought any books lately because of all the review copies the publishers are sending (so currently reading 'Blood of Elves' by Andrej Sapkowski - and enjoying it a great deal) but I do want to buy Stephen King's new short story collection (name escapes me right now!)

This year I have ordered eleven books in the Discworld series simply because I enjoyed reading three from the Terry Pratchett oeuvre in December. I just know I will like them. It is still refreshing for me to discover new authors, whether well known or not, who possess a certain something which renews my faith in my choice of reading literature. Having said that, I will admit openly that the only novel of 2009 that I am looking forward to with any gusto is A Dance With Dragons by George R. R. Martin. It makes me wonder if this supposed golden age of fantasy has come to, or is indeed coming to, an end of sorts. Currently I am reading a science fiction novel called Wulfsyarn by Phillip Mann.

For my Birthday in January I received the following.

The Prince of Nothing Trilogy - R.Scott Bakker
The Night Angel Trilogy - Brent Weeks
First Law Trilogy - Joe Abercrombie
Severian of the Guild - Gene Wolfe

So I have a few books to keep me going.

I wish my family and/or friends knew what types of books I would love to read so I can get books like you did. Sadly, they don't know what books I like. You are very lucky.

You should drop some hints while out shopping. Or get vouchers, then you get the fun of browsing as well.

Ugghhh. I just thought of the books I've purchased this year alone. Too much typing. I'm a crazed bargain hunting book shopper. Whether it's garage sales, large clear out chains (Books-a-Million) or the internet, I've managed to stretch the dollar:book ratio to insane levels. LONG LIVE THE OMNIBUS!!!
