Wonderlands

I would have to say Brian Froud is pretty much top of the list for me. I adore Arthur Rackham, traces of his beautiful style has definitely influenced Froud. A more contemporary artist also has traces of Rackham's style - Keith Thompson. A link of which I have already placed up in the Forums.

Check his work out. Incredible - www.keiththompsonart.com

I appreciate his surreal qualities and how twisted his visions are. I have too many other favourites to mention, but I'm sure you'll all remind me of the other masters.

Hi James - it's kinda quiet around here today. I'm taking a break from the DGLA stuff, so thought I'd come and talk about art for a while! Did you know that Brian and Wendy Froud are GoH at 'Trolls & Legends' in Belgium next Spring? I love his art too - particularly loved how it influenced Henson's 'The Dark Crystal!'

In terms of book jackets - when I wrote my first novel, 'Talisker' the publishers actually asked me what artist I would like! (This had never happened since!) and I asked for Mark Sawolski - he made a brilliant cover, tons of detail and actual representations of the characters! (He has also done excellent covers for Ian Banks.) Sadly, the publishers decided to re-jacket the book on the next printing - so there are not many around with that original artwork (I only have one copy left myself!) Maybe it'll be worth a fortune one day! ;-)

Well, if I have some spare cash around that time I would love to go to that. The Dark Crystal is one my favourite films - it's what awakened me to all this in the first place. I love Dave McKean too - he's influenced me a lot in terms of my artwork.

I shall certainly keep an eye out for the Sawolski's covers - which versions of the Iain Banks covers did he do? Was it any of the contemporary works or SF. I have the slick, bold designed illustrations from about 10 years ago. The all look great on the shelf in that similar style.

I think it was 'Feersum Enjin' - that very red and black one and another one which was very yellow... possibly a Culture one... as you say, very bold, illustrative designs. Hmmm, I'll have to go and rummage my bookshelves!

That's right - he did them all up to Look to Windward if I remember correctly, now they are a new illustrator's. Worth buying again just for the new artwork. lol

I love Banks - he's a genius. I really want to get down to the Newcon actually and meet him again. He really is one of my heroes.

Ooh - come to NewCon - even for the day! You'll get to meet ME! Okay, not as exciting as Iain, I guess - but far more likely to buy you a beer! ;-)

Oh meeting any other writer is exciting for me - I have a huge respect for anyone who's managed to get there. I'd love to come, really I would but I'm at a party on the sat, plus I'm having to be really careful with the pennies. However, Liam Sharp will hopefully be there representing Mam Tor - he'll be networking and chatting to the right people so please do keep an eye out for him!

If things change I shall certainly keep you posted - I'm sure they'll be plenty of other opportunites as we don't live that far away from each other.

For as long as I can remember, I have loved the art of Larry Elmore. There are others as well, but my mind always reverts back to the covers he did for the Dragonlance novels, and some of the stuff that he did for the Dungeons & Dragons game books. I will post as I think of others that I've missed.

Elmore's style reminds me of the Hildebrandt brothers in terms of colour and mood. Very slick.

I'm old school, so I still believe Boris and Frank Frezzeta (sp) are the best. But I have to say my favorite right now is Mshindo Kumba III. A few of you have commented on his artwork that I posted (Dossouye) and his amazing colors. Check him out at http://www.mshindoiart.com/coppermine/index.php

Vallejio and Frazetta are Legends. Issue 28 of ImagineFX had a brilliant 80th birthday retrospective and tribute. http://www.imaginefx.com/02287754329983022238/happy-birthday-frank-...

Thanks for the link. That ImagineFX magazine is great. I've spent some time flipping through it at Barnes and Noble.
